What are the requirements for obtaining an aviation medical certificate?

In order to obtain an aviation medical certificate in Utah, an individual needs to receive a medical examination and evaluation from a certified aviation medical examiner (AME). During the examination the AME must determine that the individual is able to safely operate an aircraft and meet all Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) medical requirements. The individual must bring to the examination a form of valid picture identification. Before the medical examination, the individual must obtain an FAA Form 8500-8 and completely fill it out. This form will include information about the individual’s medical history and any medications taken. During the evaluation, the AME will check the individual’s vision, hearing, balance, and other physical characteristics relevant to flight. After the evaluation, the individual must submit the form and any other required documents to the FAA for further review. If all requirements are met, the FAA will issue a medical certificate. The certificate issued must match the type of aircraft and operations in which the individual plans to engage. Medical certificates generally are valid for up to two years, depending on the type issued. Finally, individuals must keep in mind that in addition to the medical certificate, they will need to obtain any necessary ratings and/or endorsements from the FAA in order to be able to legally and safely operate an aircraft.
