What are the requirements for aircraft training programs?

In Utah, all individuals who wish to receive training in operating an aircraft must meet certain requirements outlined by the Utah Aeronautics Division. First, pilots must obtain a medical certificate from a qualified physician. This certificate must be obtained prior to each instruction given and every 12 months after. Additionally, all pilots must receive a minimum of 40 hours of flight experience. This includes a minimum of 20 hours of classroom instruction, 3 hours of cross-country flight, 10 hours of solo flight, and 3 hours of night flight. It is also necessary for all pilots to obtain a commercial pilot certificate and pass a written and practical examination. The commercial pilot certificate serves as an indication of the pilot’s knowledge of aircraft operations and navigation. Through the practical examination, it is determined that pilots have the skills to safely operate an aircraft and navigate through airspace. To obtain a commercial pilot certificate, all pilots must have a minimum of 250 hours of flight experience, which must include 100 hours of pilot-in-command experience, 20 hours of cross-country flight, and 10 hours of instrument flight. Finally, all pilots must complete a flight review every 24 months to maintain their certification. These requirements must be met in order to obtain a commercial pilot certificate and operate aircraft in the state of Utah.
