What is the process for obtaining an aircraft maintenance engineer type rating?

In Utah, the process of obtaining an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (AME) type rating is long and involves multiple steps. First, one must be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma or equivalent. Second, potential applicants must obtain a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Second Class Medical Certificate, which requires a physical examination by a certified AME. Third, applicants must pass a written exam covering topics such as mathematics, physics, aircraft maintenance and repair, and electricity. Fourth, they must attend an approved General and Type Course, which typically consists of 80 hours of classroom instruction and typically lasts one month. During the course, students learn how to troubleshoot and repair aircraft systems, inspect and diagnose aircraft problems, and comply with regulatory requirements. Finally, after completing the course and passing a practical exam, applicants are issued a type rating certificate. The certificate allows them to work as an AME and to maintain aircraft and provide aircraft repair services.
