What are the regulations governing air traffic control personnel?
Air traffic control personnel regulations in Utah are set forth in the Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs). The FARs for air traffic control personnel are broken down into several parts. Part 91 outlines the basic responsibilities and qualifications of air traffic control personnel; Part 43 covers the qualifications and standards for air traffic controllers; and Part 135 outlines the personnel requirements for air carriers operating under Part 135. All air traffic control personnel must meet certain qualifications and standards. They must be at least 18 years of age, have a valid pilot’s license and medical certificate, and have completed an approved air traffic controller training course. They must also possess a thorough knowledge of air traffic control rules and regulations, as well as have the physical and mental capability to safely and effectively control air traffic. Air traffic controllers must also obtain a rating that certifies their ability to perform air traffic control duties. The rating is issued by a certifying authority after the controller passes an FAA examination. In addition, air traffic controllers must complete a proficiency check every two years in order to maintain their rating. The proficiency check includes tests on knowledge of the FARs, instrument approach procedures, and aviation weather fundamentals. Overall, air traffic control personnel are responsible for the safety and efficiency of air traffic in Utah. The regulations set forth by the FAA ensure that they are properly trained and qualified to safely and effectively perform their duties.
