What are the requirements for aircraft maintenance personnel?

In Colorado, aircraft maintenance personnel must meet certain requirements in order to be qualified to perform inspections, repairs, and alterations of aircraft, engines, propellers, and parts. First, the aircraft maintainer must be at least 18 years old. They must also possess a valid driver’s license. Second, the aircraft maintainer must possess an Air Agency Certificate issued by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). In order to obtain this certificate, the applicant must have passed written tests; have successfully completed an FAA-approved aircraft maintenance course; and meet certain experience and training requirements. Third, aircraft maintenance personnel must also pass a background check carried out by the Transportation Safety Administration (TSA). This check will ensure that the maintainer has no prior convictions or disqualifying criminal history. Fourth, aircraft maintenance personnel must also obtain an FAA Form 8310-3, which is an authorization to exercise the privileges of an FAA-certificated air agency certificate. This form is required to be carried at all times and must be displayed at the airport or facility at which the aircraft maintenance is performed. Finally, aircraft maintenance personnel must be able to demonstrate that they possess the training, experience, and technical knowledge in order to safely perform the required tasks. They must also pass a written and practical examination in order to become certified to perform the required tasks. By meeting these requirements, aircraft maintenance personnel can ensure that they are qualified to safely perform their duties and abide by Colorado state and FAA regulations.
