What are the requirements for aircraft maintenance personnel?

In South Carolina, aircraft maintenance personnel must meet the requirements of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). All aircraft maintenance personnel, including mechanics, avionics technicians, sheet metal mechanics, and aircraft painters must hold an Airframe and/or Powerplant (A&P) certification. This certification requires passing written, oral, and practical exams, and must be renewed every two years. In addition to these requirements, all aircraft maintenance personnel must have successfully completed an FAA-approved training course. This course must include both classroom instruction and hands-on experience related to the areas of airframe, engines, and propeller maintenance. Aircraft maintenance personnel are also required to have at least 18 months of experience in the areas they hold certifications in, as well as document a minimum of 30 hours of training and experience in a given 12-month period. Finally, aircraft maintenance personnel must be knowledgeable in the regulations set forth by the FAA in South Carolina and any additional requirements of their employer. In order to ensure safety and compliance, aircraft maintenance personnel must have their certifications and training records readily available for employer or FAA inspections.
