What is the process for obtaining a Commercial Pilot Certificate?

To obtain a Commercial Pilot Certificate in North Carolina, an individual must take certain steps. First, a person must be at least 18 years old and have a current pilot certificate. They must also pass a physical and mental exam by an aviation medical examiner. Next, they must show evidence of their flight experience. This includes logging at least 250 hours of flight time, including at least 100 hours of pilot-in-command time. Of the 100 hours, at least 50 must be in cross-country flights and 10 must be in night flight. The person must also complete 35 hours of instruction with a certified flight instructor. This must include 15 hours of instruction in advanced flight techniques, such as high-altitude operations, night flying, and instrument flying. Finally, the person must pass a written test and an oral and practical flight test approved by the FAA. The written test covers topics such as Federal Aviation Regulations, aircraft systems, navigation, radio communication procedures, flight maneuvers, and meteorology. The oral and practical tests assess the individual’s ability to maneuver the aircraft safely and correctly under different scenarios. After all of these steps are completed, the individual can receive their FAA Commercial Pilot Certificate. They must then hold it for 6 months and have at least 50 hours of cross-country flight time in order to qualify for their airline transport pilot license.
