What is the process for obtaining an international operations authorization?
In Washington, pilots wishing to fly internationally must receive an international operations authorization from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). To obtain this authorization, the pilot must present an International Flight Plan to the FAA. The plan must contain a detailed description of the proposed flight, including the aircraft’s type and registration number, route of flight, and estimated time of arrival and departure at each stop. Additionally, the plan must include the pilot’s name and contact information. The FAA may also require more information, such as a list of passengers and crew, copies of any special authorizations received from foreign countries, and cargo manifest. Depending on the type of aircraft that the pilot is flying, the FAA might also require additional documents, such as weight and balance sheets, navigation logs, and fuel plans. Once the FAA has approved the flight plan, a pilot must apply for an international operations authorization. An application for an international operations authorization must be filed with the FAA at least 30 days before the planned flight. The application requires the pilot to submit a detailed flight plan as well as documents proving the pilot’s expertise, such as certificates of airworthiness and a log of flight experience. Upon approval, the FAA will issue the pilot an international operations authorization, which will enable him or her to legally engage in international aviation activities. It is important for pilots to note that international operations authorizations are only valid for a limited period of time, so they must be renewed on a regular basis in order to remain in compliance with aviation laws.
