What is the process for obtaining an aircraft ferry permit?

In California, the process for obtaining an aircraft ferry permit is relatively straightforward. A ferry permit authorizes the holder to operate an aircraft over areas within the state’s borders for the purpose of delivering the aircraft to another location. First, the applicant must submit an application for the permit to the airport district or local zoning board, depending on the aircraft’s destination. The form must be filled out completely and the applicant must provide information such as the make and model of the aircraft and its planned flight route. In addition, the operator must obtain a certificate of airworthiness for the aircraft and submit a copy of the paperwork to the board. Once the completed application is received, the board will review it and issue the permit if all the criteria are met. The application must include proof of insurance, as well as a detailed inspection report for the aircraft. Once the permit is approved, the applicant must submit the fees and any additional paperwork, such as a certificate of registration. The permit is valid for a maximum of 90 days and can be extended for up to another 90 days in certain circumstances. To renew the permit, the applicant must submit a new application to the board, along with all the updated paperwork. After the permit is issued, it is the responsibility of the operator to ensure that the aircraft is operated within the bounds of the law.
