What is the process for obtaining an aircraft maintenance engineer certificate?

In Minnesota, aircraft maintenance engineers must be registered with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in order to perform aircraft maintenance. To be eligible for the certificate, an individual must: 1) Be at least 18 years of age; 2) Meet the educational requirements set forth by the FAA, which include completing a two-year Aviation Maintenance Technician (AMT) program. This program can be taken at an approved school or through a combination of self-study and on-the-job training; 3) Pass two exams. The first exam is an oral exam, which covers safety, regulations, operation, and maintenance of aircraft. The second exam is a practical exam, which tests the individual’s ability to diagnose and fix aircraft systems. 4) Obtain a minimum of 18 months of verifiable work experience performing aircraft maintenance. Work experience must include an apprenticeship or other program approved by the FAA. Once all of the requirements are met, a candidate can apply for an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer Certificate. The application must include a copy of the candidate’s AMT diploma, two FAA Form 8710-2 (Airman Certificate and/or Rating Application) forms, and any other documents requested by the FAA. The FAA must approve the application before the certificate is issued. After the FAA reviews the documents, a written test may be required. Once the applicant passes the written test, the FAA will issue the certificate. With a valid Aircraft Maintenance Engineer Certificate, an individual can legally perform aircraft maintenance in Minnesota and across the United States.
