What is the process for obtaining a helicopter rating?
In Massachusetts, the process for obtaining a helicopter rating is not significantly different from the process for obtaining a rating in other states. The first step is to obtain a Private Pilot certificate, which includes a knowledge test, a flight test, and an FAA medical exam. You must also meet the federal requirements for aeronautical experience. This includes a minimum of 40 hours of flight time, with at least 20 hours of instruction, including 10 hours of solo flight. After this is complete, you can then begin to work towards a helicopter rating. To get a rating, you will need to pass an oral exam as well as a practical test. The exam tests your knowledge of aeronautical subjects related to helicopters, such as the airworthiness standards, the air traffic control system, and other topics. The practical test will test your ability to safely operate a helicopter in a variety of flight conditions. You must also demonstrate proficiency in emergency procedures and in-flight maneuvers. Lastly, you must obtain an FAA medical certificate, which requires a physical examination and a vision test. Once you have completed all of these steps, you will have earned a helicopter rating in Massachusetts.
