What are the laws relating to aircraft registration and ownership?
In Colorado, the laws governing aircraft registration and ownership are contained in the Colorado Revised Statutes Title 12, Article 2. All aircraft owned or operated in the state must be registered with the Colorado Department of Revenue unless it is a military aircraft. The registration process must be completed within 30 days of ownership or the expense of the aircraft being placed in service. To register an aircraft, an application must be made to the Colorado Department of Revenue and the title must be provided with the registration. The registration is valid for a period of three years and the owner must pay an annual registration fee. The owner is also required to obtain third-party liability insurance in the amount of at least $50,000 per person and $100,000 per occurrence, with a minimum of $25,000 property damage liability. In addition to registering the aircraft, the owner must also obtain an aircraft certificate. The aircraft certificate serves as proof of ownership of the aircraft, and includes the name of the owner, the aircraft model, serial number, and unique registration number. The aircraft certificate must be presented upon the request of law enforcement or aviation personnel. The Colorado Department of Revenue also enforces laws related to the safe operation of aircraft in the state, and any person operating an aircraft that is not registered may face criminal penalties. Additionally, owners and operators of aircraft must comply with all applicable Federal Aviation Administration regulations.
