What are the benefits and drawbacks of franchising?
Franchising is a business arrangement popular in North Carolina which involves a partnership between a company (the franchisor) and an individual (the franchisee). The franchisor typically owns the brand and the business system, and licenses these rights to the franchisee for a fee. The franchisee is then authorized to use the franchisor’s name and business systems to operate a business under that company’s control. The most obvious benefit of franchising is that it enables business owners to instantly tap into a successful business model. This allows the franchisee to tap into the brand recognition and customer loyalty that comes with the franchisor’s brand name. In addition, the franchisee can keep some of the profits generated by the business venture. On the downside, franchising often requires the franchisee to pay high initial licensing fees up front. In addition, the franchisee must generally abide by the franchisor’s rules and regulations, which may include the franchisee’s obligation to purchase goods and services from the franchisor, or to follow certain operational guidelines. In summary, franchising is a business arrangement that offers business owners the benefits of having access to an established business model and brand recognition. However, it also requires the franchisee to pay for the privilege of using the franchisor’s brand, and to comply with the franchisor’s rules and regulations.
