What types of rights do children have under International Law?
Under international law, children have a wide range of rights which are established by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). This convention sets out a variety of civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights for children. It ensures that every child has the right to recognition and equal treatment regardless of their race, religion, ethnicity, gender or social status. The convention also protects the rights of all children, including those with special needs, which includes physical, mental or social impairments. Some of the rights of children include the right to an education, the right to be protected from all forms of abuse, exploitation and neglect, the right to healthcare, the right to freedom of expression and assembly, the right to a nationality and the right to protection from discrimination. Additionally, under international law, all children have the right to play and recreation, to a name and a family, and the right to be heard in any decision that affects them. Furthermore, the CRC also requires that children receive adequate nutrition, health care, and educational opportunities. It also outlines that governments need to ensure access to quality services such as long-term care, family counseling, and foster care. It is also important that governments guarantee children’s legal rights, such as the right to a fair trial and protection against exploitation. North Carolina, which is a signatory to the CRC, is obligated to adhere to these rights in its own laws and policies. Therefore, it is important that children and their families in North Carolina are aware of their legal rights in order to ensure that their rights are respected and protected.
