Yes, there are restrictions on cannabis possession for out-of-state visitors in New Jersey. Under current New Jersey cannabis law, it is illegal for out-of-state visitors to possess cannabis. In fact, it is illegal for any person to possess cannabis under federal law. However, out-of-state medical marijuana patients who have a valid medical cannabis recommendation from their home state may be able to receive limited access to cannabis products while visiting New Jersey. These patients must present their medical cards and complete the state’s Medical Marijuana Program registration process in order to obtain access. Additionally, out-of-state visitors may be able to participate in New Jersey’s adult-use cannabis industry. Any person over the age of 21 is allowed to purchase up to one ounce of usable cannabis flower and/or up to 16 ounces of infused cannabis products from a licensed retailer. However, these products must be consumed or otherwise disposed of in the state of New Jersey before leaving the state. Possession of cannabis while leaving New Jersey is illegal. Overall, out-of-state visitors staying in New Jersey may have limited access to cannabis through the state’s Medical Marijuana Program or through an adult-use cannabis dispensary. However, it is important to keep in mind that possession of cannabis in any form while leaving the state is illegal and could result in criminal penalties.
