Are there any laws concerning the transportation of cannabis?

Yes, there are several laws in California concerning the transport of cannabis. Under the California Health and Safety Code, it is illegal to transport marijuana apart from compliance with state law. It is also illegal to possess, transport, or give away any amount of concentrated cannabis without a valid medical marijuana card. For example, it is illegal to transport over 28.5 grams of marijuana in any public place, or to transport marijuana over any state lines. In addition to this, the California Cannabis Regulation and Safety Act (MAUCRSA) also requires that any cannabis or cannabis products be transported in a child-resistant container, or in the trunk of a vehicle when traveling. The transportation must be done in such a way that it is “not visible from the exterior of the vehicle or outside of the container,” and it must be done in accordance with any applicable local laws. Finally, transporting cannabis may also be a violation of federal law, even if it is done in compliance with California state law, as cannabis is still classified as a Schedule I drug under federal law. It is important to note that any marijuana seized by federal law enforcement agencies in California will be subject to federal laws, rather than the laws of the state.
