Do I need to report a car accident to the police?
In the state of Florida, you are required to report any car accident resulting in damage or injury to either person or property. If you are involved in a car accident, you are required to report the incident to the local law enforcement agency within 10 days. According to Section 316.066 of the Florida Statutes, if a vehicle was involved in an accident resulting in death or injury or property damage exceeding $500, the driver is required to file an accident report. To report a car accident, you will need to provide the officer with the necessary information such as the location of the accident, the time and date of the accident, photos of the damages, contact information of the parties involved, and a description of what happened. If possible, try to collect contact information from any witnesses who saw the accident. The police may investigate the accident further and contact those involved for additional information. Once the police receive all the necessary information, they will take a report and provide you with a copy. It is important to note that if any of the parties involved in the accident do not have car insurance, you must provide the police with the names and addresses of the parties involved to ensure you have evidence of the other party’s negligence in case of a lawsuit. Being involved in a car accident can be an overwhelming experience, and so it is important to report the incident to the police to ensure you are protected and can receive any compensation for damages and injuries resulting from the accident.
