What types of injuries are considered catastrophic?
In Virginia, a catastrophic injury is any injury that prevents a person from performing the normal activities of daily life. This includes injuries to the head, spinal cord, and brain, as well as any injury that results in long-term or permanent physical or mental disabilities. Common catastrophic injuries include paralysis (spinal cord injury), traumatic brain injury, amputation, severe burns, and loss of vision or hearing. In some cases, even fractures and other soft tissue injuries such as lacerations or sprains can be considered catastrophic injuries if they require long-term medical care. In addition, some catastrophic injuries are caused by medical malpractice. This type of injury is often the result of a doctor or other medical professional’s negligence or failure to act according to the standard of care. Examples of medical malpractice-related catastrophic injuries include birth injuries, anesthesiology errors, surgical errors, and medication errors. These types of injuries can cause long-term or permanent disability, and those affected may be entitled to seek compensation.
