What are the deadlines for filing a credit card dispute?
In South Carolina, deadlines for filing a credit card dispute vary depending on the issuing company. Generally, a dispute must be filed within sixty days of when the disputed charge appears on the cardholder’s statement. If the dispute is not filed within this time frame, the cardholder may forfeit their right to dispute the charge. To open a dispute, the cardholder should contact the issuing company directly. The company will then send a written dispute form which must be completed and returned to them within ten days. Documentation such as store receipts or explanation of why the charge is disputed should be included with the form. The cardholder must also provide a valid mailing address where the dispute resolution documents may be sent. It is important to keep in mind that the issuing company may not investigate the dispute until the entire process is complete. Once the dispute has been investigated, the issuing company will determine the outcome. Generally, within ninety days of filing the dispute, the cardholder will receive written notice about the outcome of the dispute. If the cardholder is not satisfied with the outcome of the dispute, they may file a written complaint with the South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs or may seek legal advice.
