Can a debt collector contact my family or friends about my debt?
In Washington, debt collectors may not contact your family or friends about your debt, including seeking information about your whereabouts. The Consumer Debt Defense Law in Washington protects citizens from many of these practices. The law prohibits debt collector’s from discussing your debt with anyone other than you. It also prohibits debt collectors from revealing your name or the amount you owe to anyone other than you or your attorney. This means that your family and friends should not be contacted by debt collectors about your debt. The law also prohibits debt collectors from using harassing, unfair, or abusive language when trying to collect a debt from you. Debt collectors may not threaten to take legal action against you, or threaten to garnish your wages. Additionally, debt collectors may not send you any misleading or deceptive information about a debt. If a debt collector does violate the Consumer Debt Defense Law by contacting your family or friends about your debt, you should report them to the Washington State Attorney General’s Office. You may also want to consider taking legal action against them. It’s important to know that you have rights, and you should not be subjected to harassing or abusive efforts to collect a debt.
