What is a debt collection harassment cease and desist letter?

A debt collection harassment cease and desist letter is a written legal document that is sent to a debt collector that informs them to stop contacting the person who sent the letter. This type of letter is usually sent to a debt collector who is using harassment or other illegal means to collect a debt from a consumer. The debt collection harassment cease and desist letter must be sent via certified mail in order to provide proof of delivery. The letter should include the consumer’s name, address, phone number, the name of the debt collector, and the amount of the debt. It should also include a statement that the consumer does not agree to the debt and that they request the debt collector to cease all contact. The debt collection harassment cease and desist letter should also include a statement that the consumer is aware of their rights in the state of Maryland and that any further contact regarding the debt could be considered harassment and possibly in violation of the Collection Defense Law. If the debt collector continues to contact the consumer after receiving the letter, they may be violating the Collection Defense Law and the consumer can take legal action. Although the debt collection harassment cease and desist letter informs the debt collector to stop contacting the consumer, it does not erase the debt. If the consumer fails to pay the debt, the debt collector can still pursue legal action for collection.
