What is the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA)?

The Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) is a federal law that was passed in 1991. It protects consumers from unwanted telemarketing calls and all other types of telephone solicitations, as well as from certain types of automated calls. The TCPA is comprehensive in its scope, covering landline phones, cell phones, fax machines, and other telecommunications equipment. Ultimately, the TCPA is designed to protect consumers from aggressive telemarketers and automated calling systems. It has been successful in doing so, and has helped to reduce the number of unwanted telemarketing calls that consumers receive.
