What is a child custody evaluation?

A child custody evaluation is a process used in California courts to help decide which parent or family member should get custody of a child in a divorce or separation. It involves a set of assessments done by a professional, usually a psychologist, that look at the family dynamics, the parents’ mental and emotional states, and the needs of the child to determine what would be the best custodial arrangement. The evaluation includes interviews with the parents, sometimes the child, the child’s school, day care and/or extracurricular activities, and family members, and may include a home visit. The psychologist may also look at medical and other records, as well as reports from psychological tests. The goal is to help the court understand the family and make the best decision possible for the child. The evaluation results may include a recommendation of which parent should have primary custody, as well as visitation rights for the non-custodial parent. It’s important to note that the court does not always take the psychologist’s recommendation, but it’s often taken into consideration when deciding custody arrangements. Finally, it’s important to note that in California, both parents are generally considered fit to have custody of the child, unless there is a mental or physical health issue or evidence of inappropriate behavior that would make one parent unfit. Additionally, the court must act in the best interest of the child when making a decision about custody.
