What is a Creative Commons license?
A Creative Commons license (CC license) is a type of copyright law that provides creators with an alternative to “all rights reserved” copyright. It allows creators to keep the copyright of their work while granting permission to others to use them in certain ways, under certain conditions. In Washington, if you use a Creative Commons license, it means that you give others the right to copy and distribute your work provided they give you credit, and share their work under the same license. Creative Commons licenses come in six different types. These include: Attribution (CC BY), Attribution-ShareAlike (CC BY-SA), Attribution-NoDerivatives (CC BY-ND), Attribution-NonCommercial (CC BY-NC), Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike (CC BY-NC-SA), and Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives (CC BY-NC-ND). Each license has different rules and conditions associated with it that dictate how the work can be used or shared. Creative Commons licenses can be applied to any type of creative work - such as literature, music, photography, video, and software - as long as it is protected by copyright law. These licenses help creators share their work with the world while still retaining the rights over their work.
