What is copyright registration and how do I do it?

Copyright registration is the process of registering a copyright with the Federal government. This gives the creator of the work a protected intellectual property right. By registering a copyright, the creator is given certain exclusive rights that are otherwise not available to them. In Delaware, you can register a copyright for your work with the U.S. Copyright Office. You will need to obtain an application form, which is available online or from the U.S. Copyright Office. You will also need to provide a copy or specimens of the work, a nonrefundable fee, and a completed and signed application. Once you have submitted your application and the other required materials, the Copyright Office will review it and issue a Certificate of Registration (if the work is eligible to be registered). This document is the official record of your copyright registration. The Copyright Office will also send a copy of the registration to you, which serves as proof that you are the owner of the copyright. It is important to keep in mind that registering a copyright does not give you the exclusive right to reproduce or publicly display a work; that right is automatically granted upon the creation of the work. However, registering a copyright does provide you with certain important protections, including the ability to sue another party if they infringe upon your rights.
