How can I copyright a website?

Copyright law works a little differently when it comes to websites. In Washington, you can’t officially copyright a website itself, but you can protect some of the content on it. The United States Copyright Office offers a form of copyright protection called registration that protects original works of authorship, such as text, images, logos, audio clips and video clips. By filing the copyright form, your content is legally protected from being copied, duplicated, or distributed with out your permission. If you’re hoping to copyright your entire website, you can register each of the individual pieces of that website separately. For example, if you own a website that has text, logos, photos, and an audio clip, each of those pieces can be registered with the Copyright Office individually. In addition to copyright registration for websites, there are other legal protections available. For example, you can apply for a trademark for logos and branding. You can also register a domain name with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) which offers a limited amount of protection. The most important thing to remember is that, no matter what form of protection you choose, you need to be proactive in monitoring and protecting your work. With copyright laws, registration offers the most legal protection. If you’re confident that your website content is truly original, taking the time to copyright the individual pieces of the site is a good way to protect it.
