What is credit repair law?

Credit repair law refers to a set of legal regulations that aim to protect consumers from being taken advantage of by deceptive or exploitative credit repair services. Credit repair agencies offer services to clients that claim to help them improve their credit score. In California, these services are subject to the Credit Repair Organizations Act (CROA). CROA prohibits credit repair agencies from making false or misleading statements about their services, from charging fees prior to delivering services, and from charging excessive fees. It also mandates that credit repair agencies provide customers with written contracts that disclose the terms of the service, a three-day right to cancel, and a description of the customer’s legal rights. The law also gives consumers the right to dispute any inaccurate or incomplete information on their credit report. Under CROA, if a credit reporting agency fails to investigate a dispute or provide appropriate resolution, the consumer has the right to sue the credit repair agency. Ultimately, credit repair law exist to provide consumers with the information and protection they need to make informed decisions when considering credit repair services. It allows consumers to feel secure that the services being offered to them are fair and reasonable, and that they are being treated fairly.
