How do I register for a civil union?
In California, the process for registering for a civil union is similar to that of registering for marriage. First, both parties involved will need to obtain a license from the county clerk in their area. Both parties must be present in order to apply for the license. Identification such as a driver’s license and evidence of residency must be provided in order to receive the license, as well as a fee. Once the license is obtained, the civil union must be performed within 90 days. It can be performed anywhere in the state and must be officiated by a judge, court commissioner, or a licensed or ordained minister, priest, rabbi, or leader of any religious denomination. After the ceremony is completed, the officiant must sign the civil union license and return it to the county clerk. The couple must also have two witnesses sign the license. Once the license is returned to the county clerk, the civil union is officiated. The couple should also receive a copy of their civil union certificate as evidence of their formal union. They can also update their names, if desired, and make any other changes to their records to reflect the civil union.
