Is a civil union recognized in other countries?
A civil union is a legally recognized relationship between two people that affords them many of the same rights and benefits as married couples. In Texas, civil unions have not been legally recognized since 2003. However, many other countries have adopted civil union laws. In some countries, civil unions are similar to marriage in that they grant partners many of the same legal rights, such as the ability to make medical decisions for each other, file joint taxes, and inherit property upon the death of a partner. In other countries, civil unions may only guarantee limited rights like hospital visitation and limited inheritance rights. In the United States, gay marriage is now legal nationwide, and same-sex marriage is recognized in many countries around the world, such as the United Kingdom, Canada, and South Africa. However, the recognition of civil unions varies greatly from country to country. For example, in France, only same-sex couples are legally allowed to enter into civil unions. When traveling internationally, same-sex couples should research the laws of the region they are visiting or visiting to understand the rights and responsibilities that civil unions may offer. It is also important to remember that a civil union typically is only recognized in the country where it was established. Therefore, in countries where civil unions are not recognized, the rights and privileges of a civil union will likely not be acknowledged.
