Are civil unions recognized for veterans' benefits?

Civil unions are not recognized for veterans benefits in the state of Oklahoma. However, the federal government recognizes same-sex marriages for veterans benefits. This means that same-sex couples who are legally married in a different state can receive veterans benefits if they currently live in Oklahoma. The recognition of civil unions in Oklahoma is largely dependent on the opinion of the court. Currently, the state does not acknowledge civil unions at any level in terms of legal recognition. This means that same-sex couples cannot receive any of the legal benefits that come with a civil union. This includes the ability to visit a hospitalized partner, inheritance in the event of a death, and the right to make healthcare decisions for your partner. Despite the fact that civil unions are not recognized in Oklahoma, advancements are slowly being made. This includes the passing of a bill in 2017 that allows same sex couples who are married outside of Oklahoma to be recognized for the purpose of property tax assessed values. This is a small victory for the LGBTQ+ community and will hopefully lead to more civil rights in the future.
