How do I register my civil union with the state?
In order to register your civil union with the state of California, you must first meet the requirements of the California Domestic Partnership Law. In order to qualify as domestic partners, you and your partner must be both 18 years old or older, not related to one another, and agree to be responsible for each other’s basic living expenses. Additionally, you must both be of the same gender, or if you are of different genders, at least one of you must be over the age of 62. Once you have satisfied the requirements, you will need to complete an Affidavit of Domestic Partnership. This form is available through the California Secretary of State Office or on the California Department of Public Health, Vital Records website. You will also need to provide a valid form of ID from each partner, such as a driver’s license or passport, as well as proof of residency. Once the Affidavit is completed and signed, it must be filed with the County Clerk’s Office in the county where you are living. The filing fee varies by county, and you should contact your local county clerk’s office for specific information. After the filing is complete, the State of California will issue a Certificate of Registered Domestic Partnership to both partners. You can then use this certificate as proof of a legally recognized civil union.
