How do I dissolve a civil union?

When two people enter into a civil union, they must also determine how to dissolve it. To dissolve a civil union in California, both parties must agree to formally separate and agree to the terms of the dissolution. The easiest way to dissolve the union is by having both parties sign a notarized Agreement to Dissolve Civil Union or Separate Covenant. This document should list any assets, debts, and liabilities of the civil union, as well as the way they should be divided between the two parties. If both parties cannot agree on the terms of the dissolution, they may enter into mediation or initiate a court process. During the court process, a judge will make a decision on the division of assets and debts, as well as any other matters such as child support and visitation rights. For the court process, both parties must file a Petition for Dissolution of Civil Union. To dissolve the civil union, both parties must appear in court and provide evidence. The evidence may include documents regarding the division of assets and debts, and the terms of the dissolution. Both parties must sign a Judgment of Dissolution of Civil Union, which must be filed with the court. Once this is done, the civil union will be dissolved and both parties will be free to remarry.
