Are civil unions recognized in the insurance industry?
The answer to the question of whether civil unions are recognized in the insurance industry in the State of Oklahoma is unfortunately, no. Although the State of Oklahoma recently passed a civil union law in October 2020, the law does not affect the insurance industry in any way. This means that the insurance industry in Oklahoma does not recognize civil unions, nor do they offer any kind of insurance coverage or benefits for those in civil unions. The lack of recognition for civil unions in the insurance industry is a huge setback for the LGBTQ+ community in Oklahoma, as it means that members of civil unions cannot receive any sort of insurance benefits that would be afforded to those in traditional marriages. This means that partners in a civil union are unable to share healthcare coverage or any other type of insurance, such as life insurance or property insurance. To make matters worse, the lack of recognition in the insurance industry also means that if one of the partners in a civil union passes away, the other partner would not be eligible to receive any death benefits, as they are not considered to be in a “spouse” relationship. Despite the tough situation in the State of Oklahoma, other states have started to recognize civil unions in the insurance industry. For example, California recently passed a law in 2019 that allows those in civil unions to receive the same insurance benefits that are available to those in traditional marriages. Hopefully, in the near future, Oklahoma will follow suit and recognize civil unions in the insurance industry.
