What is the Pregnancy Discrimination Act?

The Pregnancy Discrimination Act (PDA) is a civil rights law that was passed in the United States in 1978. It is part of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This law prevents employers in the U.S., including employers in the state of Indiana, from discriminating against workers based on pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions. The PDA applies to companies with more than 15 employees. The protection given to pregnant individuals by the PDA applies to all aspects of employment. This includes hiring, firing, pay, job assignments, promotions, layoffs, training, fringe benefits, and any other term or condition of employment. This means that health insurance coverage for pregnancy-related conditions must be equal to those of any other medical condition. The PDA is an important piece of civil rights legislation that protects pregnant individuals from discrimination in the workplace. It helps ensure that pregnant individuals are treated efficiently and fairly in all aspects of their employment.
