What is data classification?

Data classification is a process for organizing data according to its sensitivity and levels of protection. It is a way of sorting data into groups or categories based on its importance and the level of security needed to protect it. The data classification process is an essential part of a comprehensive data security program. Data classification is important for several reasons. First, it simplifies the process of protecting data; by sorting the data into categories, organizations can prioritize which data needs more or less security. Second, it helps organizations define and implement data security policies that apply to data of varying levels of sensitivity. Finally, data classification is required by many data security laws, such as the Pennsylvania Data Security Law, which requires organizations to take reasonable measures to protect the security, confidentiality, and integrity of consumers’ personal information. Data classification usually includes three distinct categories: public, internal, and confidential. Public data is the least sensitive and can be shared with anyone; internal data is more sensitive and should only be accessed by authorized personnel; and confidential data is extremely sensitive and should only be accessed on an as-needed basis and with the proper authorization. Organizations must come up with their own system of classifying data based on the sensitivity of the data and the level of protection needed.
