What is an ignition interlock device and how does it work?

An ignition interlock device (IID) is an anti-drunk driving device installed in a vehicle that requires the driver to take a breath test before being allowed to start the vehicle. If the test shows the driver has been drinking, the engine will not start. The device also requires periodic breath tests while the vehicle is in operation to make sure the driver has not been drinking. The IID is connected to the car’s electronics, including the ignition and fuel delivery systems. Before attempting to start the vehicle, the driver is required to provide a breath sample into the IID. If the device detects a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) above the pre-set limit, the engine will not start. If the BAC level is below the pre-set limit, the engine will start normally. The IID also includes a lockout timer, which is a period of time during which the engine will not start if the driver has attempted to start the vehicle with a BAC that is too high. The purpose of the lockout timer is to prevent the driver from repeatedly trying to start the vehicle with a high BAC. In Washington, IID is mandatory for all convicted drunk drivers. It is installed in the vehicle and must be in use for the duration of the sentence. If the driver fails to comply with the requirements, their license may be revoked or suspended.
