What are the types of disabilities recognized by the ADA?
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) recognizes a wide range of disabilities. These disabilities are broken into two categories, physical and mental. Physical disabilities include things like limited mobility or blindness. This could mean someone who uses a wheelchair or someone who is visually impaired, either partially or completely blind. Other physical disabilities could include a hearing impairment, deafness, or a chronic medical condition that limits a person’s ability to perform certain tasks or activities. Mental disabilities include things such as learning disabilities, mental illnesses, and autism spectrum disorders. Learning disabilities can range from dyslexia and dyscalculia to ADHD and developmental delays. Mental illnesses can include depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder. Autism spectrum disorders are neurological disabilities like Asperger’s Syndrome or Autism. In the state of Texas, all of these disabilities are covered under the ADA. This means that those with physical, mental, or developmental disabilities have the right to access public services and to access reasonable accommodations in the workplace. Employers must make reasonable accommodations to ensure those with disabilities can work, and public services must be made available to ensure people with disabilities can access them.
