What is an interactive process?
An interactive process is an important part of the disability law process in North Carolina. It is a communication process between an individual with a disability, their employer, or a representative of either party. This process helps identify reasonable accommodations that an employer can make to assist an employee in performing his or her job duties. For example, if an employee needs a particular type of wheelchair accessible desk, the interactive process helps ensure that the employer and employee are both aware of the options available and the process for obtaining the desired accommodation. The interactive process encourages communication and collaboration between the employer and employee. It can also help to identify potential solutions to workplace barriers that the employee may face due to their disability. The interactive process typically includes several steps. These steps may include determining the disability, discussing possible reasonable accommodations, exploring potential solutions, and identifying any costs associated with the accommodations. This is followed by implementation, review, and monitoring of the agreed-upon accommodations. The interactive process is important in helping both parties come to an agreement that meets the needs of the employee and is in compliance with the law. It also encourages good communication and collaboration between employers and employees, which is beneficial to both parties.
