What is a section 504 plan?

A Section 504 Plan is a document that outlines how a school can provide students with disabilities the same educational opportunities that are available to students without disabilities. It is part of the federal civil rights legislation, known as Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. The purpose of a 504 Plan is to ensure that all students have equal access to the curriculum, academic materials, and instruction. This includes helping students with physical, mental, or emotional disabilities participate in regular classes and other activities. A 504 Plan is tailored to the individual student, based on their specific needs. It outlines the goals the student and their school have set for them, and the accommodations and services that should be made available to the student. This includes organization of the classroom, classroom instruction, and other services outside of the classroom, such as transportation, health services, recreation, counseling, and other types of support. The 504 Plan also makes sure that all of the accommodations and services are being followed and that the disabled student is making adequate progress. It should be regularly evaluated to ensure that the student is receiving the services and accommodations needed to help them succeed in school. In Florida, schools must provide students with disabilities a free appropriate public education as outlined in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. Furthermore, they must comply with all the provisions required by Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.
