What is a section 504 plan?

A Section 504 Plan is a legally binding document, which outlines the accommodations and services a person with a disability in Texas is entitled to so that they can fully access and participate in school or work. This plan provides individuals with disabilities the same opportunities as everyone else and is designed to give a person with a disability equal access to the same educational and employment opportunities available to non-disabled individuals. In Texas, Section 504 plans are written by a group of individuals who consider the person’s individual situation and disability. The plan is tailored to that individual and provides the accommodations they need to participate in activities just like everyone else. Section 504 plans typically include adjustments to the curriculum that make accommodations for the individual’s disability, such as providing the material in an alternate format or offering modifications to testing procedures. They may also include other adjustments to the environment, such as offering adaptive technology or providing additional supportive services. Section 504 plans provide individuals with disabilities the opportunity to reach their maximum potential in the classroom or the workplace. They help ensure that individuals with disabilities are not excluded from educational or employment opportunities because of their disability. Texas disability law requires that all schools and employers provide reasonable accommodations for individuals with disabilities in order to provide them equal access.
