What is the difference between an accommodation request and an accommodation plan?
An accommodation request is a formal request for changes to a work environment or changes to an academic environment, so that a person with a disability can perform their duties or educational activities. An accommodation plan is a document that outlines the changes that have been agreed upon that will provide the person with the disability the necessary environment they need to perform the duties or activities. In Texas, under Disability Law, an accommodation request is typically made by a person with a disability or an advocate. The request is made to the employer, school, or other institution, and outlines the type of accommodations needed. It is up to the employer, school, or other institution to decide if the request is reasonable and can be met. An accommodation plan is a more detailed document that is created after an accommodation request is approved. The accommodation plan outlines exactly what changes need to be made to the work environment or academic environment, for the person with the disability, and often times includes timelines for implementation and follow-up. The accommodation plan is also used to track the progress of the implementation of the accommodations. The main difference between an accommodation request and an accommodation plan is that an accommodation request is the initial request for changes, while an accommodation plan is the final document detailing the changes that were agreed upon and must be implemented.
