What types of services are available for people with disabilities?
People with disabilities in Florida are protected by state and federal laws, such as the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, which guarantee them rights and access to services and accommodations. In Florida, people with disabilities may be eligible for a variety of services and programs, depending on their individual needs and the type of disability they have. Schools are required to provide appropriate educational services to students with disabilities. This can include specialized instruction and support, such as individualized education plans and special accommodations. Services may include assistive technology, occupational therapy, psychological evaluation, or speech-language services. Employment services are also available for people with disabilities. The Florida Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR) provides services and supports to help individuals with a disability to become employed and/or maintain employment. DVR may provide job training services, job placement assistance, career counseling, and other services to help individuals with disabilities prepare for, find, and keep a job. In addition, people with disabilities may be eligible for Medicaid waiver programs in Florida. These funds may provide such services as personal care, attendant services, respite care, home-delivered meals, and assistance with housekeeping services. Finally, people with disabilities may be able to access assistive technology devices and services in Florida. Assistive technology can include wheelchairs, hearing aids, communication devices, or computer-related services such as voice recognition software. In summary, Florida offers a variety of services and programs designed to meet the needs of people with disabilities. To find out more about what services are available, contact your local Area Agency on Aging or the Florida Division of Vocational Rehabilitation.
