What is an individualized education plan (IEP)?

An Individualized Education Plan (IEP) is a plan developed for students with disabilities who are in Virginia public schools. It is designed to meet the student’s specific needs by providing educational and other related services that will help them reach their full potential. The IEP outlines the services that are to be provided, such as special education, related services, and accommodations, as well as goals and objectives that the student is expected to meet. The IEP is individual to each student and is developed by a team of professionals who have knowledge about the student’s needs and how to best address them. This team typically includes representatives from the school system, the student’s parents or guardians, and any other parties that could provide meaningful input to the plan. The IEP is reviewed by the team on a regular basis to ensure the student’s needs are still being met and that they are making progress towards their goals. Students with an IEP are protected under the Americans with Disabilities Act, which ensures that they receive an appropriate education in the least restrictive environment possible. This also means that the student may be entitled to certain accommodations or modifications that will help them access the curriculum. The IEP plays an important role in helping students with disabilities access the education they deserve and reach their potential. It ensures that each student’s needs are identified and addressed appropriately, in order to give them the best chance to succeed.
