How do I change my name after a divorce?
When a person in Arizona undergoes a divorce, the process for changing their name varies by county. In most counties, the name change must be completed within 30 days of the judgment of the divorce being filed. In Maricopa County, the process for changing your name must begin with a Petition for Name Change. The Petition must contain the petitioner’s current name, the name they wish to change to, and the reason for the name change. It is important to list any aliases or common-law names used in the past five years as well. Once the Petition for Name Change is filed, the petitioner must publish notice in a local newspaper of their intent to change their name. This notice must be published at least once a week for four consecutive weeks. After the fourth publication, the petitioner may file a final hearing certificate with the court. The petitioner must also attend a court hearing to finalize the name change. At the hearing, the petitioner may be asked to provide additional information before the court grants the name change. Once the court approves the name change, the petitioner will receive an order that must be sent to the Arizona Department of Health Services, the Department of Transportation, and all other agencies that recognize the petitioner’s prior name. By completing these steps, the petitioner can successfully change their name after a divorce in Arizona.
