What is Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI)?

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is a federally funded insurance program that provides benefits to disabled individuals in Washington and across the country. This program is administered by the Social Security Administration (SSA). To be eligible for SSDI, individuals must meet certain criteria and have to have worked in jobs covered by Social Security over a certain period of time. When someone is approved for SSDI, they may be eligible for a monthly benefit payment, medical coverage (Medicare or Medicaid, depending on their age), and vocational rehabilitation services. The amount of benefits received varies from person to person, based on the amount of money they paid into the program. SSDI also provides additional benefits such as retroactive payments, cost-of-living adjustments, and an increase for dependents. In addition to the direct benefits, SSDI also helps protect individuals against discrimination based on their disability. While the rules of SSDI can vary from state to state, its purpose remains the same; to help disabled individuals in Washington and across the country who are unable to work due to a physical or mental impairment. Disability Planning Law in Washington provides people with the information and resources necessary to apply for benefits and receive assistance with the application process.
