How do I appeal a denial of SSDI benefits?

If your Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) application has been denied, you have the right to appeal the decision in the state of Virginia. The appeal must be in writing and must include information to support your claim. The appeal should include the reasons why you believe your application should be accepted, medical evidence, your work history, and any other information that may be relevant. Once you have submitted your appeal, it will be reviewed by the Social Security Administration (SSA). The administration will look at all the evidence you provided and decide whether or not to uphold or overturn the initial decision. If your appeal is denied, you still have options. You can file a request for reconsideration, which means your appeal will be reviewed by a different Disability Examiner. You can also file an appeal in front of an Administrative Law Judge. A judge will gather additional evidence, listen to your case, and make a decision. Lastly, if all of your appeals are denied, you can file a request for review by the Appeals Council. The council will look over all the evidence and decide if the previous decision should be changed. No matter the outcome, it is important to have patience and to keep all evidence organized while appealing a denied SSDI application in Virginia.
