When should an Advanced Medical Directive be used?

An Advanced Medical Directive should be used when a person is unable to make decisions about their healthcare. This could be due to a number of factors, such as a severe illness or injury, an accident, or any other event that could cause a person to become unable to communicate or make decisions. An Advanced Medical Directive allows a person to make their own decisions about their healthcare in advance of such an event occurring. This allows them to specify the types of treatments that they do and do not want to receive if they become unable to make decisions themselves. It also allows them to specify a person or persons to make decisions on their behalf in the event that they are unable to make them themselves. In Texas, an Advanced Medical Directive should be completed and signed by the person who will be receiving the medical treatment, or by the person’s designated representative. The document must also be witnessed and signed by two witnesses who are not related to the person or designated representative. Advanced directives are important to ensure that a person’s wishes are respected and followed in the event of any medical emergency or situation that could prevent them from making decisions for themselves.
