What disability benefits are available to me?
In Virginia, there are several disability benefits that may be available to you. These include Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), Supplemental Security Income (SSI), and Virginia State Benefits. Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is designed to provide financial assistance to individuals who become disabled as a result of a medical condition and are unable to work. To qualify for SSDI, you must have worked and paid Social Security taxes for a minimum of five years of your lifetime. This disability insurance is based on the amount of work done before becoming disabled. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is designed to help people who are disabled and have limited income and resources. In order to qualify for SSI, you must demonstrate financial need by meeting certain income and asset limits. Virginia State Benefits are a variety of programs designed to provide assistance to individuals with disabilities and their families. Programs include: the Disability Determination Program (DDP); the Virginia Initiative for Employment not Welfare (VIEW); Community Living Assistance Services and Supports (CLASS); and the Virginia Medicaid Program. It is important to note that the eligibility requirements for these programs can vary greatly, and it is best to contact the local Social Security office or DSS office for more information. Additionally, professional legal advice may be beneficial in understanding your rights and developing an appropriate disability plan.
