What rights do I have under the ADA?

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a federal law that provides protection from discrimination for individuals with disabilities. Under the ADA, people with disabilities are granted certain legal rights, such as access to places of public accommodation and equal opportunity in employment. In Texas, people with disabilities have the right to reasonable accommodation so that they may participate in public services, goods, and activities. This can include making physical modifications to an establishment or providing services in an alternate way. For instance, businesses can install ramps for those in wheelchairs or provide an audio version of information on the website. Individuals with disabilities may also have the right to use accessible transportation, such as public buses or vans. Public places and businesses must also provide communication aids, such as an interpreter or TTY, to ensure that persons with hearing or speech impairments can communicate effectively. Employers must provide reasonable accommodations for employees with disabilities in order to allow them to perform their job duties. This can include changes to the work environment, such as providing an ergonomic chair or raising a workstation. The ADA also protects individuals with disabilities from discrimination in housing, places of public accommodation, education, and communication. People with disabilities have the right to participate in testing procedures, be afforded reasonable access to medical care, and be free from discrimination based on their disability.
