What are public benefits?

Public benefits are services or financial aid provided by the government to help people who have difficulty meeting their basic needs. In Pennsylvania, public benefits like Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) are available to help people with disabilities or those who are in a financial bind. SSI provides cash assistance and medical benefits for those with low incomes and limited resources, while TANF helps families who have limited income and resources. Other public benefits available in Pennsylvania are the Medical Assistance Program (Medicaid), which provides comprehensive health coverage for those who meet specific requirements, and the Child Care Works program, which helps eligible families pay for child care so they can work or attend school. There are also public benefits specifically designed to help those with disabilities. The Pennsylvania Office of Vocational Rehabilitation, or OVR, helps individuals with disabilities find employment and achieve self-sufficiency. Through OVR, people with disabilities may also receive support in finding a job, developing their skills, or attending school. Other public benefits of particular importance to those with disabilities include the Accessible Housing Program, which helps low-income and disabled people find affordable housing, and the Home and Community Based Services waiver, which provides certain services to those with disabilities that help them stay in their own homes. Disability Planning Law in Pennsylvania outlines the rights of people with disabilities to access public benefits, as well as ensuring that they are given a fair and equal opportunity to access those benefits.
